African American Scholarship Grants

Hundreds of scholarships and grants are available to students of African American descent. No matter whether you have entered your senior year of high school or plan to enroll in a university, scholarships cover every field of study for African American students who have demonstrated financial need, outstanding scholastic ability or incredible leadership in their community.
  1. Ronald McDonald House Charity/African-American Future Achievers Scholarship

    • The Ronald McDonald House Charity (RHMC) offers several scholarship opportunities, through participating RHMC chapters around the country. The RHMC/African-American Future Achievers Scholarship award of at least $1,000 goes to high school seniors under the age of 21 who are U.S. residents with at least one parent of African American or Black Caribbean heritage. Additionally, eligible students must have maintained at least a 2.7 GPA, must have qualified to attend an accredited college or university and must live within the geographic borders of a local RHMC chapter participating in this scholarship program. Required application materials include a transcript, letter of recommendation and a parent/guardian's IRS 1040 form.

    National Association of Black Journalists Scholarships

    • Eligibility for one of the several scholarship awards created by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) requires applicant students to hold a membership to the organization. In addition, the scholarships require enrollment at an accredited college or university. Application materials include essays, transcripts, a resume and work samples (varying for each award). The program offers several scholarship awards, varying in award amount, from the Visual Task Force Scholarship ($1,250) up to the NABJ/Scholarship ($25,000).

    Thurgood Marshall College Fund

    • The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) targets undergraduate, graduate and law students attending any of the fund's designated member public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Other criteria include maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA (and at least a 1650 SAT score for incoming freshman applicants), U.S. citizenship status and full-time enrollment at any of the member public HBCUs. Various awards are available in varying amounts, for use during the fall or spring semesters only (not summer).

    Jack & Jill of America Foundation Scholarship

    • Jack & Jill of America annually presents the Jack & Jill of American Foundation Scholarship, available to high school seniors accepted to accredited four-year universities and having maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA. As part of the application process, applicants must demonstrate solid community service records. Recipients can use award monies, which range from $1,500 to $2,500, for tuition and room-and-board expenses. Dependents of Jack & Jill of America members are not eligible to receive these awards.
