Nontraditional Student Grants

American colleges, once storied places for the wealthy, upper-class or male, are now welcoming those that don't fit the traditional mold of a student, including older adults, single parents and minorities. Thanks to numerous scholarship funds and charitable organizations, nontraditional students are finding it easier to finance their educations. Below is a list of some of the available scholarships for nontraditional students.
  1. Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) Scholarship

    • The Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) Scholarship is a scholarship offered by the Executive Women International (EWI) Foundation. The grant is offered to those considered non-traditional, including older students and those seeking retraining for a new profession. In order to qualify, students must demonstrate financial need, have a clearly defined career goal and must reside within the boundaries of their designated EWI chapter. The award amount is $2,500. Money can be used to cover education or living expenses.

    Russ Griffith Memorial Scholarship

    • The Russ Griffith Memorial Scholarship if offered to students who haven't been enrolled in school for at least five years. This includes both high school graduates who haven't pursued college and those that have had some college experience. The scholarship is offered to students by the Datatel Scholars Foundation. In order to qualify, students must write an essay on the challenges of being a returning student and the importance of scholarships for returning students. The award amount is $1,500.

    Talbots Women's Scholarship

    • The Talbots Women's Scholarship is offered to a woman pursuing an undergraduate degree at least ten years after receiving her GED or high school diploma. The awards are given to women with notable achievements and financial need. Six women receive $10,000 and fifty women receive $1,000.

    The Reverend John Cunningham Diversity Scholarship

    • The Reverend John Cunningham Diversity Scholarship is awarded to a student at Rhode Island's Providence College. To qualify, a student must speak a first language other than English and represent a minority culture. The award amount varies, but it usually covers at least 2/3 of educational expenses.
