Students who are more than one-quarter Indian and members of federally recognized Native American tribes are eligible for BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) scholarships. Students apply through their tribe or area BIA office. Scholarships range from $500 to $4,000 per year. The BIA scholarships can be used at 26 institutions, the majority of which are community colleges controlled by tribes through the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. Students should note that while all fields are eligible, priority is given to business, engineering, law, health and natural resources.
The American Indian College Fund administers several scholarships for American Indian students. The Tribal College General Scholarship program awards scholarships to students attending tribally controlled institutions of higher learning and those colleges determine eligibility. The Special Scholarship Program awards scholarships to American Indian students pursuing undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. Special scholarships can be used at tribal colleges as well as state and private universities.
