Scholarships for Sophomore College Students

Getting a degree can do a lot to advance your career, but the cost of going college can be prohibitive. Scholarships are available to help offset the expense of school. Scholarship funds can be used to pay for tuition, textbooks and sometimes cost-of-living expenses. There are several scholarships just for college sophomores. Do a little research to find the scholarship that best applies to your situation.
  1. Barry M. Goldwater Scholarshp

    • The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship awards up to $7,500 per academic year. Funds can be used for costs such as tuition, textbooks, room and board and fees. According to the Goldwater Scholarship website, applicants must "have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering." Students must be nominated for the scholarship by their institutions, so if you're interested in the Goldwater Scholarship, talk to your school's financial aid office. Each year four-year colleges can nominate up to four sophomores and two-year colleges can nominate up to two sophomores. Qualifying applicants can receive up to two years of scholarship support. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship awards up to 300 scholarships annually.

    Ronald Reagan College Leaders Program

    • The Ronald Reagan College Leaders Program, administered by the Phillips Foundation, offers renewable scholarships from $1,000 to $7,500 per academic year. Scholarships are available to sophomores who have shown leadership in areas such as promoting freedom, American values and constitutional principles. According to the scholarship website, the scholarship honors Reagan's "achievements on behalf of freedom, American values and constitutional principles, his optimism about America's future, and his faith in America's youth to protect and enhance the legacy of liberty entrusted to them." Applicants must be full-time students in their sophomore year at an accredited American four-year school. Winners can reapply for a one-time renewal. Applicants must write an essay detailing their background and career goals and describing their commitment to "promoting freedom, American values and constitutional principles" through leadership activities.

    Udall Scholarship

    • The Udall Scholarship Foundation awards up to 130 scholarships per year, ranging from $350 to $5,000 to students in their sophomore or junior year of college. Qualifying students must be preparing for careers in the environment or be Native American or Native Alaskan students committed to a career in tribal public policy or Native American health care. Qualifying career areas related to the environment include business, economics, education, engineering, health, justice, policy, science and urban planning and renewal. Tribal policy areas include cultural preservation and revitalization, economic development, education, natural resource management, tribal governance, tribal law and tribal sovereignty. Native American health care areas include health care administration, medicine, health care research and social work.
