Each year, the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association (AOPA) Air Safety Foundation-Donald Burnside Memorial Scholarship awards a $1,000 scholarship. Eligibility requires that applicants be a college junior or senior, have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 or higher, be enrolled in or plan to be enrolled in a baccalaureate level (aviation degree program), and be a U.S. citizen or legal resident. Applicants typically must submit one original and seven copies of the scholarship packet, a written essay, all official college/university transcripts and an application form.

The Clay Lacy Scholarship Fund awards $5,000 each year. To qualify for this award, applicants must be legal residents, or U.S. citizens, reside in California, demonstrate an interest in aviation through any aviation-related membership, and be enrolled in or plan to be enrolled in a college, university, technical or formal aviation program, where a certificate, license or degree is obtained. Applicants typically must write an essay, demonstrate financial need, list extracurricular activities, and submit certified copies of all transcripts from high school and colleges as well as two letters of recommendation from two faculty members from any school attended.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) participates in the federal Pell Grant program. U.S. citizens, permanent residents and legal aliens, who can demonstrate financial need, are awarded grant money, assisting them in pursuing a bachelor's degree in aviation. To apply, fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form online. Apply to an aviation bachelor's degree program at ERAU. If accepted, contact the ERAU financial aid office and inform them that you have applied for a Pell Grant. The financial aid office will notify you if you have been awarded any money, and ERAU will be awarded the money. You do not have to repay any money awarded to ERAU through the Pell Grant. While at ERAU, you must be enrolled at least half-time in an aviation degree program, you must maintain satisfactory grades and you may not default or owe any payment on any loan.
