The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, a division of the U.S. State Department, offers scholarship assistance for language education through the Critical Language Scholarship Program. Critical Language Scholarships pay for the entire cost of up to a year of intensive language study in another country, including travel costs, room and board, visa fees, and tuition. To be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen, and must be enrolled in college as either a graduate or undergraduate. A student may use a Critical Language Scholarship to pursue the study of one of 13 languages, including Arabic, Persian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The United States Department of Education makes scholarship funds available for the study of language through the Foreign Language and Area Studies Program. Grants provided under the Foreign Language and Area Studies Program vary in amount by institution, though the average estimated allowance for a graduate student is $18,000 and the average estimated allowance for an undergraduate student is $10,000. To be eligible, a student must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, and must be pursuing a program of study combining language and area studies at a participating institution. The annual deadline for application is March 23.
