Grants for Military Wives

Many military wives contemplate a postsecondary education degree while husbands are deployed overseas. Others consider this when husbands return home from deployment. To this end, military wives have an advantage in finding funding for college because of an extensive range of resources available. There are several grant and scholarship opportunities for wives of reserve, veteran and active duty soldiers.
  1. Army Scholarship Foundation

    • The Army Scholarship Foundation awards many scholarships to military wives of active duty soldiers and National Guardsman. $500 to $2,000 in scholarships are awarded each year. Candidates must be high school graduates and enrolled in an accredited college or university. Scholarships are only open to wives who are 30 years or younger. Candidates must fill out an online application, file a Free Application for Federal Aid (FASA), submit an essay, show evidence of a spouse's active service and provide her tax returns from the prior year. Deadline is May 1st.

    Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship

    • The Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship is sponsored by the National Military Family Association. This scholarship is available to wives of active duty, retired and reserve soldiers. The association awards scholarships from $500 to $1,000 to pay for fees, tuition, room and board, GED programs, professional certifications and undergraduate and graduate studies. Applicants must complete a survey of questions and a written essay in addition to the application.

    Vice Admiral E.P. Travers Scholarship

    • The Vice Admiral E.P. Travers Scholarship is awarded to wives of active duty Marines and Navy sailors only. Scholarships are given in an amount up to $2,000. Wives must be enrolled in a vocational, technical, or university to be considered. In addition, applicants must demonstrate a financial need and carry a 2.0 GPA if awarded a scholarship. Wives, who do not receive scholarships, can apply for a low-interest loan up to $3,000. Deadline is May 1st.

    General Emmett Paige Scholarship

    • The General Emmett Paige Scholarship awards wives of active duty soldiers or veterans. The scholarship gives fifteen $2,000 awards each year to cover books, supplies, room and board and tuition. Applicants must be accepted by a university and carry a 2.4 GPA if awarded the scholarship. Applicants must submit an application, show proof of husband's military service, his military identification and provide two written letters of recommendation from professors. Deadline is March 1st.
