Scholarships for Navy Wives

Being the wife of someone serving in the Navy is never easy. Military spouses have to deal with many challenges not faced by those in the civilian world, like coping with long deployments and raising children alone until a loved one returns, constant moves to international and domestic locations, and modest incomes. In honor of the sacrifices made by Navy wives, many organizations offer scholarships to help Navy wives earn a college degree and become bettered prepared to support their families and family members in the service.
  1. Gold Star Spouses Scholarship Program

    • The Gold Star Spouses Scholarship Program offers three options for the spouses of Navy service personnel. Applicants must be unmarried widows; spouses of men who died or became disabled in the attack on the USS Stark or the Sept. 11 tragedy at the Pentagon; or spouses of men who died while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom before June 1, 2007. The scholarships vary in amount and can be used for undergraduate education. Applications must be submitted at least two months prior to the start of school.

    Naval Special Warfare Scholarships

    • The Naval Special Warfare Scholarships are available to the wives and children of select Navy personnel who are seeking their associate or bachelor's degree in any subject as full- or part-time students. The spouse of eligible applicants must be a Special Warfare Combatant Crewman, Navy Seal or service member in an Naval Special Warfare command on active duty. Scholarship amounts vary and are presented based on an essay, academic accomplishments and merit. The awards are renewable yearly.

    Military Spouses to Graduates Scholarship

    • Western Governors University (WGU), an accredited online school, offers the Military Spouses to Graduates Scholarship to wives of active duty Navy servicemen. The scholarship is worth up to $1,500 and can be used to study education, information technology, health professions or business. Applicants must be new students entering a degree program at WGU. The scholarship is awarded based on academic accomplishments and "readiness for online study," according to the university.

    NMCCG Scholarship

    • The Navy Wives Clubs of America offers the NMCCG Scholarship (Navy, Marines Corps, Coast Guard) to help dependent wives of active duty servicemen in seafaring branches of the military. The scholarship can be used to pursue an associate, bachelor's or graduate degree, or to attend vocational school. It is open to those with a high school diploma or GED and is awarded based on prior scholastic accomplishments and financial need.

    Bookoo Military Scholarship Program

    • Bookoo offers the Military Scholarship Program to give back to the many servicemen and their families who use its website (though no membership is required). Each year, 10 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 are presented to active duty servicemen and women, as well as their husbands and wives. Applicants must provide brief answers to six essay questions on the application.
