Government Grants for Nursing Degrees

According to Cost Owl.com, the average cost of a four-year nursing degree in 2010 is around $14,000 a year at a public university, while private college nursing students can expect to pay $30,000 or more per year. Nursing school entails other expenses, such as the cost of books, which typically run from anywhere between $200 and $1,000 per semester in 2010. Luckily, several state and federal government programs are available to assist nursing students with the cost of study.
  1. Federal HRSA Nursing Scholarship

    • The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services makes full-tuition scholarships available to students who are pursuing a nursing degree. In addition to the cost of tuition, the HRSA Nursing Scholarship also pays for educational fees, books, lab expenses, and provides a monthly cost-of-living stipend of approximately $1,300 (in 2010). To be eligible, a student must be a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States. Although part-time students and graduate students may apply, preference will be given to full-time undergraduate students. A scholarship recipient is obligated to work for two years in a low-income or under-served area upon graduation. The annual deadline for application typically falls in April or May.
