Grants for Master's Degrees in Nursing

The U.S. government offers several grants for institutions promoting the advanced education of nurses. These grants usually go to institutions that educate nurses in underserved or poor areas. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers three different grants for master's degrees in nursing.
  1. Advanced Nursing Trainee Program

    • The Advanced Nursing Trainee Program provides financial support for "registered nurses enrolled in advanced education nursing programs to prepare nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse-midwives, nurse anesthetists, nurse administrators, nurse educators, public health nurses and nurses in other specialties" to receive a traineeship. Students in nursing master's programs can, therefore, be in an institution that has received funding through this federal program. The program offers $16 million, with an average award of $52,000. The fund gives preferences to institutions and groups that serve poor and needy areas of the country. The fund also gives special weight to fund applicants who will use the money to train nurses within the Health Professional Shortage Areas. Eligible applicants are "schools, health centers, and nonprofits that have been accredited by a "recognized body or state agency."

    Advanced Nursing Education Grants

    • The Advanced Nursing Education Grant funds programs, including master's programs, that enhance the advanced education of nurses. The fund has a limit of $12,012,680 and averages $250,000 per award. The fund gives special preference to institutions and programs that educate nurses in rural and underserved areas, or that train in fields where nursing expertise is in short supply. Preference, however, is given to those applications that "rank above the 20th percentile of applications recommended for approval." Advanced education programs or institutions that have not been accredited or recognized by a state agency will not be considered for the grant awards.

    Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship Grant

    • The Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship Grant awards students in master's of nursing programs with funding for a traineeship in anesthetics. The award has $1.25 million to work with, and averages $16,667 per award. Karen D. Breeden (kbreeden@hrsa.gov) is the contact person for the award. As with many grants, this one gives extra consideration to awards that will help rural or underserved areas of the country. The institution offering the master's program, to be eligible, needs to be recognized by a state agency or an accredited body.
