Grants for Online Degrees

College grants are often referred to as free money, but there are strings attached since most grants are given by government agencies or non-profit groups. Grants are available to students taking classes at online universities, but the university must be accredited. You will also need to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  1. Types

    • Federal Pell Grants may be a way to pay for your undergraduate online degree. The amount is based on full-time or part-time status and dates of attendance.

    Function

    Potential

    • Students who qualify for the Pell Grant and attended an academically rigorous high school program may qualify for the Academic Competitiveness Grant.

    Identification

    • College juniors and seniors majoring in science, math or technology may be eligible for the National SMART Grant.

    Considerations

    • Many universities--including those online--will offer grants for particular groups such as women and minorities. Universities also offer grants for students studying specific fields such as computer technology.
