To qualify, you must be the descendant of a Maryland resident, demonstrate financial need, be enrolled full- or part-time in an accredited Maryland college or university, and take the SAT I or ACT. The Distinguished Scholar Award by the Maryland Higher Education Commission is reserved for the best and brightest Maryland high school students entering college. To qualify, you must have a minimum GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale, and you must take the SAT I test. Students must also have parents who are Maryland residents to qualify. This award is highly competitive and does not consider financial need. The award amount is $3,000 per academic year.

The Banneker/Key Scholarship is offered to students by the University of Maryland. The award is the most prestigious merit-based grant that is offered. To qualify, students must display great leadership potential and must rank at the top of their high school class. Only the most academically gifted students are considered for the scholarship. The award amount includes full tuition and fees.
