The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS), an organization of technology professionals, supports graduate student research activity with a summer grant program. Students who are CIS members can apply for funds to cover summer research at their home university or at another university or research agency. The summer project must be related to the field of computer intelligence. Three to five grants are awarded per year in amounts from $1,000 to $4,000. A grant can be renewed for a second summer to continue the research. Eligibility requirements include a description and proposed time line of the proposed research, a detailed budget and two reference letters. Applications can be submitted online.

Student computer programmers as young as 18 years old can apply for summer research projects sponsored by the technology corporation Google. Open-source software projects are the focus of the program. Full or part-time students can propose research with Google-approved companies or projects developing open-source software. Students receive a $5,000 stipend. Google started the program in 2005 and, in 2010, gave funding to 1,000 projects. Students worldwide can apply for the program, except for residents of countries that are on the United States trade embargo list, such as Cuba and North Korea. Applications are completed online. Students can submit up to 20 proposals but can only work on one summer project.
