Art Grants for Summer Program Students

Art grants for summer program students support paid internships in famous museums and art institutions around the United States, studio mentoring at artists retreats, and time plus resources for original creative projects. Grants and stipends from some of America's top museums, art schools, and universities help students in the visual and performing arts as well as those interested in the art business or in curatorial training.

  1. Los Angeles Arts Internship Program

    • This program offers a 10-week paid summer internship to 74 undergraduate students. The students, chosen and funded by the LA County Arts Commission, work with nonprofit arts organizations engaged in the performing, presenting, and literary arts. To be eligible, students must live or study in Los Angeles County, must be enrolled in a full-time community college or four-year university, and must have completed at least one semester of studies.

    Skowhegan Fellowship

    • The School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA), Boston, offers a full scholarship--the Ann and Graham Gund Scholarship--to its students who are accepted into the Skowhegan program in Maine. Skowhegan is an intensive nine-week summer residency for gifted, emerging visual artists. At Skowhegan, students are mentored by established creative artists. SMFA students are eligible for the Gund Scholarship once invited to Skowhegan.

    Academy of Art University Portfolio Grants

    • This San Francisco art college offers at least 300 grants annually to help students complete their portfolio studies in art. Grant amounts are decided by a selection committee and range between 25 and 75 percent of the cost of up to two courses. Students who apply must be enrolled in the institution's summer and fall terms and have successfully completed the summer term. The grants are for students working toward AA, BA, BFA, 2nd degree BFA, or Certificate programs who are enrolled, on campus or online, for the first time.

    University of Chicago Arts Council Summer Fellowships

    • These fellowships encourage creative work by fully enrolled University of Chicago students during the summer months. The fellowships support original projects in any of the performing, literary, and visual arts. Generally, the projects should be destined for performance, production, publication, or exhibition during the following academic year. Students from all areas and colleges of the university can apply. In 2010, 15 grants, each worth $1,500, were awarded in creative writing, film, music, performance, and visual arts.

    Bryn Mawr College Summer Funding

    • The Dean's Office at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania administers the Arts Internship Fund in support of a summer internship, project, or field experience. Projects considered should be in the visual or performing arts, Projects that involve working with artists, to create new work or learn new techniques, are given preference. Performing artists at Bryn Mawr are also eligible for the college's Dance Study Grant. This grant is offered to one or more students and covers intensive summer studies in dance technique, performance, or composition in a nationally or internationally recognized program.
