The US Fulbright Scholarship Program brings the best students from other countries to the US to complete their masters or PhD studies. 1,800 new Fulbright Scholars begin studying in the US each year. The program is considered diplomatic outreach to the public. Only students from countries participating in the program are eligible.
Federal Pell Grants are famous in the US for helping low-income students begin or complete their undergraduate studies. International students can also apply. The US Department of Education determines which candidates qualify as low-income. This formula is based on adding a percentage of net income and a percentage of net assets. The formula accounts for students who dependents, independents, or have dependents of their own.
The Undergraduate Scholarship Program finances an undergraduate education for disadvantaged students who are intent on pursuing a career in biomedical research. Obviously, this is a specialized program. In addition, foreign students can only apply if they are eligible to work in the US, because part of the scholarship program includes employment at the National Institute of Health, which runs the program. See the Resources Section for the requirements for non-US citizens.
The National Institute of Health also offers a Summer Internship Program with a paid stipend to foreign students who can show proof of permanent residence in the US. The foreign student applicant will also have to provide an alien registration card. Candidates must be enrolled in a High School or college, at least part time. The program allows the intern to work alongside leading scientists in biomedical research.
