Government Grants for Nursing Students

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reported in 2010 that nursing is one of the most in-demand careers and will continue to be for quite some time. In 2000, there were 8.8 million practicing nurses in the country; by 2020 there will be 9.5 million nurses, and that won't be enough. Because of various factors---aging population growth, aging and retiring nursing workforce and increasing demand for health care---the demand for qualified nurses is growing exponentially. To foster a solution to this shortage, many government programs offer scholarship grants to nursing students.
  1. Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program

    • The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of HHS has a grant program to pay part of working nurses' student loans. If you acquired loans in the process of obtaining your nursing credentials and work for a minimum of two years in an eligible nonprofit medical facility, the HRSA will pay off 60 percent of your remaining loan amount due upon approval of your application. Add a third year of service and the HRSA will pay off an additional 25 percent of the original loan amount. Eligible individuals must be employed at least 32 hours weekly and have the proper credentials. Eligible facilities include health centers, clinics and hospitals, government human services departments and agencies and nursing homes; all must be nonprofit.
