Category 4 Army Benefits

The military provides benefits to active duty and veteran personnel, and their families. Military personnel are provided pay, health care, housing and educational benefits.

Education benefits are described in the Montgomery GI Bill of Rights. Under the provisions of the GI Bill, Army personnel are eligible for college and job training benefits. Category IV of the GI Bill describes educational benefits provided to veterans of military service and members of the National Guard.
  1. Tuition

    • Category 4 benefits pay for tuition at colleges and universities.

Under the Montgomery GI Bill, active duty and veteran Army personnel are eligible for up to 36 months of benefits to pay for college or job training. Under Category 4 of the GI Bill, veterans who also participated in the Veterans Educational Assistance Program are eligible for tuition benefits.

According to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, military veterans must have been on active duty on Oct. 9, 1996, been a participant in the VEAP program and paid in at least $1,200 as the service member's contribution to the program. This applies to National Guard personnel who served between June 30, 1985, and Nov. 29, 1989, and had no prior military service.

    Housing Allowance

    • Eligible Army and other military veterans are eligible for housing benefits paid under Category 4 of the GI Bill of Rights. The housing allowance is paid directly to the veteran and is equivalent to the basic housing allowance for an active duty E-5 non-commissioned officer with dependents living in the same geographical area as the school.

According to the Department of Defense, the basic housing allowance is determined by rank and geographic location. For example, a veteran attending college in the Los Angeles area would receive a housing allowance of $2052, as of 2010.

    Books and Supplies

    • Eligible Army veterans can receive up to $1,000 for books and supplies.

Eligible Category 4 Army veterans are paid a yearly allowance for necessary books and supplies for attending school. The stipend is paid directly to the veteran yearly. This benefit is only to be received by veterans attending school on more than a half-time basis, and is not available to veterans solely engaged in online or distance learning.

According to Military.Com, the post 9-11 GI Bill pays eligible veterans up to $1,000 for books and educational supplies. This allowance is paid proportionately according to the number credits taken by the veteran student. The rate for the stipend is $41 per credit hour taken.
