Florida Grants for College

Students attending colleges and universities in the State of Florida can find educational grants based on qualifications such as financial need, academic achievement and work experience. Grants include public funding from state and federal programs as well as private scholarship funds. The Office of Student Financial Assistance State Programs, part of the Florida Department of Education, provides information about grant programs and administers higher education scholarships offered by the state.
  1. Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship Program

    • The Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship Program offers financial aid for students seeking an undergraduate degree at Florida Memorial University, Bethune-Cookman University, Florida A & M University and Edward Waters College. Eligible students include Florida residents who are United States citizens, or non-citizens who are eligible to receive educational grants. Students must need financial assistance and take a minimum of 12 hours each term. The program is only open to students who have not previously obtained a bachelor's degree. High school students applying for the program must have a minimum cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 3.0, or the equivalent from their school. Applications for the Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship Program are available at the financial aid offices of Florida Memorial University, Bethune-Cookman University, Florida A & M University or Edward Waters College. As of June 2010, the program awards $3,000 per school year.

    Florida Student Assistance Grant Program

    • The Florida Student Assistance Grant Program (FSAG) offers grants for students seeking undergraduate degrees from public and private colleges and universities. Applications vary, depending on the institution the student plans to attend, and include the Florida Public Student Assistance Grant, the Florida Private Student Assistance Grant and the Florida Postsecondary Student Assistance Grant. Each institution offering the grant program determines the award amount, eligibility, application processes and deadlines. All students applying for the program must be residents of Florida, United States citizens or non-citizens who are eligible to receive educational grants. The program provides funding only for students who need financial assistance and those who have not obtained a previous bachelor's degree. Students must take a minimum of 12 hours per term in a bachelor's or associate's degree program. In order to apply for a renewal, students must earn a minimum 2.0 GPA. As of June 2010, the program provides a maximum of $2,069 and a minimum of $200 per student each school year.

    Florida Work Experience Program

    • The Florida Work Experience Program offers grants for students who have work experience and need money to fund their eduction. The program requires applicants to be Florida residents, United States citizens or be eligible to receive grant funds as non-citizens. Grants are offered at universities, colleges, career centers and community colleges. Each educational institution determines the application process, eligibility, deadlines and the amount of awards. The program offers funding for students who do not have a bachelor's degree and for students with degrees who enroll in institutions that prepare students for careers in education. Part-time and full-time students can apply for the program. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA to renew the award. Educational institutions base funding on the amount of hours students work while attending school. Students receive grant funds from their employers.
