Scholarships for Music Education Majors

Affording a college education can seem like a daunting task. But with a little effort anyone can locate additional funding. Many scholarships available for music education majors. Students should be sure to check not only with their school, but also outside organizations and foundations involved in music education. Such scholarship opportunities might require an audition, but the application process can often be as simple as filling out an application.
  1. National Federation of Music Clubs Scholarships

    • The National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) offers two scholarships specifically for music education majors. The first is the Gretchen E. Van Roy Music Education Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship is available to any junior music education major affiliated with NFMC. The second is the Myrtle Mehan/Hazel Morgan Music Education Scholarship. This $475 award is available to any sophomore music education major affiliated with NFMC. A $5 application fee is required.

    Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies Awards

    • Sigma Alpha Iota offers a scholarship for students pursuing graduate studies in music education. According to the Sigma Alpha Iota website, the student must be a member of the fraternity, have completed undergraduate studies in music education and been accepted to a graduate program in music education. Additionally, if the student has no prior teaching experience, a video of the applicant student teaching must be submitted. The award amount is $1,500.

    Miriam Hoffman Scholarship

    • The United Methodist Church offers the Miriam Hoffman Scholarship. The award is available to any full-time student pursuing a degree in music education or music ministry who has been a member of the church for one year. According to the website of the United Methodist Community at American University, the applicant needs a minimum grade-point average of 2.3 and must be able to demonstrate financial need. The award amount varies based on the aforementioned criteria.

    Lawrence University Music Education Scholarships

    • Potential music education majors at Lawrence University are eligible for scholarships. The student must attend a music education workshop, which occurs on selected audition days. At the workshop, the student is given opportunities to apply conducting techniques learned and teach a group lesson. To receive the award the student must be enrolling in a bachelor's degree program in the Conservatory of Music and submit all necessary applications for admission.

    Camerata Chorale Music Education Scholarship

    • The Camerata Chorale, based in Poughkeepsie, New York, offers a scholarship for area students pursuing degrees in music or music education. Information is made available to students in Dutchess County and surrounding areas. Students applying must submit an essay describing why they are pursuing a career in music. According to the Camerata Chorale website, additional criteria include scholastic achievement and involvement in school and community music ensembles. The award amount is between $500 and $1,000.
