Grants for Moms

Women sacrifice a lot when they become mothers. Often, this includes their educational and professional goals. There are a number of grant and scholarship options available for mothers who are looking to go back to school. There are several private agencies that can assist with funding to help open doors for moms seeking to transform their lives.
  1. Displaced Homemaker Scholarships

    • The Association on American Indian Affairs awards the Displaced Homemaker Scholarships annually to women who were forced to abandon their professional and education goals in order to be a mother and tend to their family's needs. To be considered,applicants must be at least 1/4 Indian unless the scholarship states otherwise and from a tribe that is federally recognized. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that primary causes for putting their education on hold were due to unforeseen circumstances.

      To apply, mothers must contact the association directly for an application. Mothers will be asked to submit their monthly budget and a personal essay. Eligible students can apply for this scholarship on a yearly basis with award amounts up to $1,500 per year. Funds must be used for transporation, childcare, education and basic living costs.

    P.E.O. Program For Continuing Education

    • The P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education (Philanthropic Education Organization) awards monetary support to mothers each year. Grant money is funded through the international division of P.E.O. This grant gives up to $3,000 to moms who are unable to afford to go back to school and pursue the professional dreams they always had prior to having children. Grant awards are intended to pay for basic expenses such as books, supplies, tuition and child care. Applications are available through local P.E.O chapters.

    Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarships Fund

    • The Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarship Fund was created in 1978 and since has awarded money to more than 500 women. This scholarship is not specially designated for mothers, but doesn't exclude them either. This is one of the few foundations that are intended for only older women in education and professional environments. To be considered, a women must be 35 years old or older, low-income and pursuing a degree. The degree can be an associate's, bachelors or technical training. Applicants must download an application from their website starting November 1st for the following school year. Letters of recommendation and a personal essay must be included. The application deadline is March 1st. More than 50 scholarships were awarded to women in 2009.
