The Verizon Foundation's Competitive Literacy Grant supports programs in educational literacy. The mission is to help children and young people transition to adulthood as influenced by a strong education. The belief is that they'll be better prepared to reach their potential and give back to their communities. Verizon literacy projects are technology based, and include Thinkfinity.org which supports teachers with free K-12 web-based lessons. They continue to support and develop partnerships with national and community-based non-profits geared toward increasing literacy and educational achievement. Elementary and secondary schools are encouraged to apply, along with nonprofit educational providers. Applications must be completed on the Verizon website.

A good portion of the $100 billion dollars for education made available through the Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is for education through Teacher Quality Enhancement Grants. The purpose for these funds is to better prepare teachers through recruitment and support for new teachers, preparing them to work in math, science and the technologies--high needs areas in teacher shortage regions. Over $43 million was released to states in 2009 to place teachers in residency programs and provide them with scholarships. Each state Department of Education has its own program with information about this funding, how the money will be allocated and to be applied for. Teacher Quality Partnership Grants in New York State are used to fund teacher professional development, establish mentoring programs, and support for institutions of higher education in their teacher preparation programs.
