Educational Grants for Women in Engineering

Women tend to be an underrepresented group in the engineering field. As a result, some foundations and organizations offer grants to women interested in studying and working in engineering.
  1. Society of Women Engineers

    • The Society of Women Engineers offers grants to women studying engineering in accredited undergraduate programs. Applicants must be entering their junior or senior years of college and must have a GPA of at least 3.0 if they are sophomores when applying or 4.0 if they are upperclassmen. Applicants must provide a copy of their college transcripts as well as two letters of recommendation to be considered. Applicants can fill out an application on the society's website at societyofwomenengineers.swe.org

    Women in Engineering Division

    • The Women in Engineering Division of the American Association for Engineering Education offers an Apprentice Education Grant to women studying for a career in engineering education. The division gives $2,000 to two students for travel expenses to the American Association for Engineering Education annual conference. Check online at wied.asee.org/activities for information.

    Association for Women in Science

    • The Association for Women in Science offers a number of grants to female engineering students. The association gives grants each year to undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students who plan to take their education into a science or engineering career. There is an undergraduate grant of $1,000 and a predoctoral grant of $1,000 open to the respective students each year. There is also the Satter Award for women who have had to care for their families for three to four years, rather than finish their PhD. This grant helps women returning to school after this time off. The association also offers the Barbara Filner award to female PhD students in engineering who have mentored other women in this field. Applicants can download applicants on the association's website at awis.org

    Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship

    • The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship is open to female computer engineering students. Applicants must be going into their senior year or a graduate program. To be eligible, applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.5 (or 4.5 on a 5.0 standard.) The award recipient will receive $10,000 and a trip to Google headquarters for a three-day retreat. Applicants can apply on the scholarship's website at http://www.google.com/anitaborg/

    American Association of University Women

    • The American Association of University Women offers fellowships to graduate students in engineering and other technical fields. Fellowships are between $5,000 and $18,000.
