Grants for Education Majors in Alabama

Students in Alabama who plan to become teachers have a variety of scholarship and grant options available to them. Federal financial aid, national scholarship programs and local scholarship programs aim to assist students in attending the college and program of their choice. Education majors in Alabama, though, have a few additional options available to them from specific state-based resources.
  1. Jay Murphy Scholarship

    • The Central Alabama Community Foundation offers students in Montgomery County the opportunity to apply for the Jay Murphy Scholarship. This grant, for students wishing to become teachers, requires a 2.5 grade point average, an application, high school transcripts and an essay outlining the student's educational goals. Finalists may be required to interview with the selection committee. Awards range from $200 to $1,000, according to CACF. Applications are available year-round, but must be submitted by an April deadline.

    Alabama PTA Elizabeth Baldwin Hill Scholarship

    • Students who will be juniors in college and plan a career in teaching can apply for the Alabama PTA Elizabeth Baldwin Hill Scholarship. The application must be submitted along with two letters of recommendation - one must be from an educator. The recipient of the Hill Scholarship, a one-time award of $500, must attend a publicly-supported four-year college or university in Alabama and promise to teach in Alabama for at least one year. The deadline for the scholarship is in early March with the award announced in April. Recipients are invited to attend the Alabama PTA Awards Banquet.

    Mildred, Mack & Blanche Stewart Teacher Education Endowed Scholarship

    • Students planning to attend the University of Alabama-Birmingham are eligible to apply for the Mildred, Mack & Blanche Stewart Teacher Education Endowed Scholarship if they are a graduate from Jefferson County Public School System, or Spain Park, Leeds, Hewitt-Trussville or any high school in Bibb, Blount, Cullman, St. Clair, Shelby, Tuscaloosa or Walker counties. Applicants for the award must submit an application, transcripts, have a 3.0 GPA, show financial need, submit a handwritten 500-word essay about why they have chosen the field of education and two letters of recommendation from instructors, counselors or college-level instructors.

    Alabama Space Grant Consortium (ASGC) Teacher Education Scholarship Program

    • Students planning to enter a career teaching math or science and planning to attend Auburn University, the University of Alabama, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of South Alabama, Alabama A&M University or Tuskegee University are eligible for a non-renewable grant of up to $1,000 from the Alabama Space Grant Consortium. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, attending or planning to attend one of the seven consortium schools and planning to major in science, mathematics or earth/

      space/environmental science with the intent to teach in a K-12 school. Applications must include transcripts, letters of recommendation and a statement of academic and career goals.
