Grants for College Criminal Justice Majors

Criminal justice involves the study of issues relating to the legal system and the maintaining of order as related to society. The field offers its pursuers a number of options when choosing an occupation, including various law enforcement professions. The study of criminal justice is a popular endeavor and can be studied at every level of higher education. For students interested in this field, there are a number of grant opportunities to assist in the pursuit.
  1. The David E. Whitmire Scholarship Fund

    • The David E. Whitmire Scholarship Fund offers $500 for students majoring in criminal justice, political science, criminology or police administration. Students can either be studying full or part- time, at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Also, a grade point average of 3.5 is required. The application is due each year on December 15. The scholarship is named after a former member of the Akron Police Department.

    NBPA Alphonso Deal Scholarship Award

    • The Alphonso Deal Scholarship, offered through the National Black Police Association, is awarded to a student wishing to purse law enforcement, and similar career options. The purpose is that the student assists in the progression of criminal justice. In order to qualify, a student must be a high school senior, offer a letter of support from a school official, submit a transcript from high school, possess good character and be accepted to either a two-year college or four-year institution. The yearly application deadline is June 1.

    Sheryl A. Horak Law Enforcement Scholarship

    • Sheryl A. Horak Law Enforcement Explorer Memorial Scholarship is a $1,000-maximum scholarship, whose yearly amount is based on the amount of the donation. The scholarship is named for an Iowan police lieutenant killed in the line of duty. The application is open to high school seniors, interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement, who are currently Law Enforcement Explorers. The Law Enforcement Exploring program is for students 14 to 20 years old and offers insight into various careers in law enforcement. Candidates wishing to apply for the Horak Memorial Scholarship must obtain documentation from an approved agent and are evaluated on their hobbies, grades and their capacity to guide others. Three references must be submitted with the application, including two individuals not related to the field, as well as a 500 word essay. The essay topic is based on why the applicants are interested in law enforcement. The application deadline is March 31 and three copies of the application are necessary, along with a black and white photo of the applicant.
