College Grants for Women

While many grants and scholarships exist for college and university studies, women may have a hard time finding funding that is targeted particularly at them. However, several programs offer different options that give women money in the form of grants, which are need-based, and scholarships, which can also be need-based, but more generally describe funds awarded to a student. The two terms are often used interchangeably. Women in traditionally male-dominated fields, such as math and science, have many options open to them, as well, and should research scholarships and grants particular to these fields.
  1. Jeanenette Rankin Women's Scholarship Fund

    • The Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to women in dire economic need and has helped over 500 women from the United States to attend college since 1978. Students must be women 35 or older, U.S. citizens, enrolled or accepted at an accredited school, and pursuing a degree. Income limits for women with single-member households were $13,578 in 2010, $22,254 for two-member households, $30,542 for three-member, $37,703 for four-member, $44,497 for five-member, and $52,034 for six-member households. The Rankin Foundation considers applicants' goals, plans for reaching their goals, challenges they have faced, and their financial situations as factors in determining scholarship recipients.

    American Association of University Women

    • The American Association of University Women, which offers generous grants to women pursuing research at the graduate level, also offers scholarships to women at the undergraduate level. However, they also launched a program called the AAUW Branch and State Local Scholarship Clearinghouse Pilot Program. For this program, students apply directly to their state or local branch of the AAUW (branches can be found on the AAUW's website), which will allow women students to submit an application online through a centralized website. Amounts of scholarships vary widely by state and may be as small as several hundred dollars or as large as several thousand dollars. Students should contact the Iowa City branch ([email protected]) of the AAUW for further information.
