Grants for Women Pursuing Advanced Education

If you are a young woman who wants to earn more than a bachelor's degree so you can advance in your career or change careers entirely, you have funding options of which you can take advantage. Some of these scholarships and grants are closed to non-citizens of the United States; others have no citizenship requirement.
  1. American Association of Unversity Women

    • The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has a global outreach in place, ensuring that women can access needed financial funding for advanced education. In the 2007-2008 academic year, AAUW provided funding for over 250 grants, fellowships and other special awards for women.

If you are planning to return to school or you are already in school, consider applying for opportunities such as American fellowships, intended for female doctoral candidates who are completing their dissertations or for postdoctoral research. Funds can also be used to prepare their research for publication. In order to qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen or a legal resident.

Other advanced educational opportunities include: one-year postdoctoral research leave fellowships, short-term research publication grants and dissertation fellowships.

    Career Development Grants

    • For the 2010-2011 academic year, AAUW is offering financial awards ranging from $2,000 up to $12,000 to women who already have undergraduate degrees and are planning to advance their degree, come back into the workforce or change career fields completely. Applications from women pursuing their first undergraduate degrees and from women of color are given special consideration.

Scholarship and grant funds are intended to be used for women who are working past their undergraduate degree, including their second undergraduate degree, master's degree or specialized training for professional or technical fields.

APS/IBM Research Internship for Undergraduate Women

    • You can apply for financial aid funding through the American Physical Society and IBM if you are interested in an internship for the purpose of participating in a summer research internship program. This program seeks to encourage more women to pursue advanced education in science fields, including computer science and engineering. These internships are paid and come with an additional $2,500 stipend to be used during the school year. This opportunity is open to female students of sophomore or junior class standing, carrying a minimum 3.0 GPA, enrolled in a U.S.college or university at the time of application. This internship carries no citizenship restrictions.
