Scholarships for Medical Majors

Spending the better part of a decade paying for an undergraduate degree and medical school can net six-figure debts, according to the American Medical Association. While private organizations and universities offer scholarship money through highly competitive merit awards, there are plenty of smaller scholarships that can reduce debts.

    • The American Medical Association boasts it can reduce medical students' debts by as much as 84 percent by awarding scholarships that start at $1,000. Since the program began, it has provided $60 million to medical students by channeling the money through universities' deans' offices.

    National Health Service Corps

    • By agreeing to commit service to the National Health Services Corps, medical students can receive scholarships to pay their medical school tuition, as well as monthly stipends to support themselves. Recipients must commit at least two years to the corps, and after graduation they will work in a health professional shortage area.

    Alliance Medical Education

    • The Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance awards $2,500 to students in their second or third year of medical school. Recipients must be Pennsylvania residents enrolled in a Pennsylvania medical school.

    Arkansas Health Education Grant

    • The Arkansas Department of Higher Education manages the Arkansas Health Education Grant Program. The program offers varying scholarships for students enrolled in the following fields: dentistry, optometry, chiropractic medicine, osteopathy, podiatry and veterinary medicine. The program is intended for students who attend a school outside of Arkansas.

    LCF Medical Research

    • Students pursuing an advanced medical degree can apply for a scholarship in a pool of 70 through the Lincoln Community Foundation, which is based in Lincoln, Nebraska. The foundation prefers candidates who are women, are pursuing a physician or nursing degree, and can show a financial need for a scholarship.
