Grants for Minors in College

While most people assume that a college student is 18 years old, a growing number of part-time and full-time students in college are technically minors. Gifted students who skipped a grade, graduated early from high school, or simply want to challenge themselves academically often enroll in college before their peers. However, college and college-related expenses can be a burden for many families. Thankfully, there are a number of programs available that offer grant money or scholarships to minors enrolled (or preparing to enroll) in college.
  1. Girls Going Places

    • Girls Going Places is an organization that offers scholarships/grants to girls aged 12-18 who demonstrate extraordinary financial acumen or interest in the business world. The program is run by Guardian Life Insurance. The money can be used by students in any college program, of any age. In addition, the money can be used towards any business or entrepreneurial programs. To be eligible for an award, a girl must be nominated by an adult (a parent, a supervisor, a counselor, a coach, a teacher, etc.) 15 awards are bestowed annually, and each award ranges from $1,000 to $10,000.

    Stuck at Prom

    • Stuck at Prom is the annual competition for high school students looking to earn money for college. Sponsored by Duck brand duct tape, competitors create a formal look for prom entirely from duct tape, with the most creative and technically impressive designs eligible to win thousands of dollars. In 2010, the company planned to award 20 prizes to students. Minors will need to have their parents or legal guardian fill out a liability and consent form.

    GPA Isn't Everything

    • Sponsored by Cappex, the "$1,000 GPA Isn't Everything Contest" can benefit students of any level of academic achievement. Applicants are selected based on how well-rounded their life is. A student's GPA is not a major factor in selection of the award; academic merit, community involvement, and participation in extracurricular activities are all equally weighted. Minors are eligible, provided they are either currently enrolled in college, or will be within 12 months of winning the contest. Applicants must register with Cappex, and fill out a brief enrollment form.
