Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) offers merit scholarships to both current and future students. VCU reviews all students who meet VCU's School of Engineering admission eligibility requirements for scholarship awards and considers incoming freshman for 12 engineering merit scholarships. Incoming students do not need to complete a scholarship application for these scholarships. In 2009, VCU instituted the FIRST Robotics Scholarship for engineering students interested in robotics. The EDC Scholarship rewards engineering students who have an interest in the arts.
VCU also awards merit scholarships to continuing students who have demonstrated academic success. Seven general engineering scholarships exist. VCU awards three scholarships specifically to chemical engineering students, two to electrical engineering students and one to mechanical engineering students. Continuing students do not need to fill out a scholarship application; VCU considers all continuing students for these awards. In addition to these merit scholarships, the Philip Morris Scholarship rewards top engineering students who minor in business or pursue an M.B.A. degree. Students must apply specifically for this scholarship.

The University of Michigan offers first-year engineering students the opportunity to earn an engineering merit scholarship. The College of Engineering reviews all incoming first-year students for these scholarships--no additional scholarship application is necessary. The college determines merit by an applicant's ACT or SAT scores, GPA, class rank, activities, previous awards, recommendations, and application essay. Most of these awards are granted only according to merit, but some include a demonstrated-need component. Scholarship recipients can renew most of these awards annually. The number and award amount of these scholarships varies according to available funding. The college also awards a merit scholarship to transfer students each fall and winter term. The same merit criteria applied to incoming freshman are applied to transfer students, and as with freshmen, the school automatically considers all transfer applicants for an award.
