You don’t have to be a math genius to know that paying for college can be expensive. With college costs rising, students increasingly look to scholarships to help cover the cost of their education. For math and engineering students, there are thousands of dollars in scholarship funds available to help further their educational and professional goals.
  1. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

    • The Barry Goldwater Scholarship was created to help further the education of mathematics, engineering and science students. The scholarships, worth $7,500, are awarded to junior and senior undergraduate students who are pursuing a math or engineering degree. Applicants must have at least a "B" grade point average and must be nominated by their school's appointed faculty member to be considered.

    Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Scholarships

    • The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation offers $10,000 scholarships to engineering and mathematics students who are planning to pursue a career in research upon the completion of their degree. Scholarships are awarded to junior, senior and graduate students at a select number of colleges and universities and they must be nominated by a member of their program's faculty to be considered for the award.

    American Society of Naval Engineers Scholarship Program

    • The American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) provides scholarships to undergraduate and graduate engineering students. Scholarships of $3,000 are awarded to undergraduates and $4,000 for graduate students. Applicants must have a strong academic record and work history, and graduate applicants must be a member of the ASNE to apply.

    Alice T. Schafer Prize for Excellence in Mathematics

    • The Alice T. Schafer Prize is awarded to female undergraduates who demonstrate excellence in mathematics studies. The amount of the award varies and applicants must be nominated for the award. Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement in mathematics, dedication to the field and participation in mathematical contests.

    National Science Foundation Scholarships

    • The National Science Foundation offers a scholarship program for math and engineering undergraduate and graduate students. Recipients are eligible to receive up to $10,000 annually. Applicants are selected based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need.

    Department of Homeland Security Scholarships

    • The Department of Homeland Security offers scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in mathematics or engineering. Recipients receive $9,000 during the school year and an additional $5,000 for the mandatory ten-week summer internship program. Additionally, there is a required one-year period of full-time service in a relevant field of homeland security research

    National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

    • The Department of Defense offers a three-year fellowship program for students who are currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a graduate studies program for mathematics and/or engineering. Applicants must be planning to obtain a doctoral degree at some point in order to qualify. The program pays all tuition and fees for recipients as well as providing them with a monthly stipend and limited medical coverage.
