Summer Biology Internships for Undergraduates

For biology students looking to go further within their program, use their knowledge in a hands-on setting and conduct extensive research, summer opportunities are available. Such internship research programs will allow the students to immerse themselves in biology and learn from esteemed professionals within the field. However, internships are competitive and prospective students are expected to take the internship opportunities seriously.
  1. Rockefeller University

    • Rockefeller University offers the Rockefeller University Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program for undergraduate students majoring in the sciences, including biology. According to Rockefeller University, "SURF students work with leading scientists in a broad range of areas including biochemistry; structural biology and chemistry; molecular, cell and developmental biology; immunology; virology and microbiology; neuroscience; physics; and mathematical biology." The 2010 deadline for applications was February 1, and applications could be found online. Out of around 500 applicants, only approximately 15 students are selected, making the program highly competitive. As part of the fellowship, students receive a $3,000 stipend, with free housing being provided for those students who cannot commute. During the fellowship students will conduct and present extensive research and work on projects with faculty. More information can be obtained at:

    Albert Einstein Program

    • The Albert Einstein College of Medicine offers a Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), which is designated for 50 exceptional undergraduate students to build on their existing knowledge of Biology. The program is designed for rising seniors, but on rare occasions exceptional sophomores can apply. The 2010 dates for the program are from June 9 to August 6. Applications can be submitted online, with all materials being sent to the email address listed below. While attending the program, students will participate in group sessions where research is discussed, and participate in workshops focused on career planning. Those select few chosen as participants of the program are awarded a $3,000 stipend, free housing, and a maximum of $500 for traveling expenses for those students living outside the state of New York. While there, the students will "work with Laboratory staff on independent research projects in the mentor's field of expertise -- specifically in the areas of cancer biology, neurobiology, plant biology, cell biology, genetics, molecular and structural biology, or computational biology." The purpose of conducting the research is to present their work at an annual Symposium esteemed scientists from all over the world. The program is open to rising junior and senior students, and those chosen receive a $4,000 stipend over the duration of the 10-week program. Applications can be found online.
