Grants for Design Students

It is imperative to offer design students grants to enable bright minds, no matter their economic status. This allows students to study in the promise that they will design innovative solutions that help progress society. More innovation gives way to the hope that we can out-design our current issues whether it is urban planning, architecture or engineering. Usually the grants are given on a competitive basis by submitting projects from a student's portfolio.
  1. ASHRAE Senior Undergraduate Grant

    • The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Senior Undergraduate Project Grant Program funds students who are enrolled in the engineering, technical and architectural departments. This grant is meant to enable exploration and advance the studies of the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry via senior design and construction projects. The funds are designated for supplies and equipment to create the HVAC&R project. There's a $5,000 maximum.

ASID & AIU Global Edge Grant

    • The American Intercontinental University (AIU) along with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) provides design student grants to study in London. This grant is called the Global Edge Grant, and offers $750 to students who are studying at a university or college and have a student membership with ASID. During their London studies, the students are required to enroll in a minimum of two classes or 10 quarter hours of academic credit. The other requirements include being in good academic standing in the student's resident university or college and meeting minimum requirements for study abroad.

    SOM Travel Grant

    • One of the largest design grants offered is from the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) Foundation. The grant is $50,000 for one student of architecture, urban planning or design school who has proven her capacity for innovation in design. Students can be graduating, or current undergraduate or graduate students. These students are encouraged to incorporate travel discoveries from abroad into their current and future works. To be eligible a student must submit portfolios, research plans and travel itineraries. The student must also be enrolled in a U.S. accredited design school. Near the beginning of each year, the deadlines are posted on the foundation's website. (See Resources 1)
