The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services administers the HRSA Nursing Scholarship Program, which is open to students pursuing undergraduate or graduate nursing programs. The scholarships pay for tuition, fees, some other schooling costs and a monthly stipend for books and other expenses. After graduation, nurses must spend two years at a clinic or hospital with a critical need for nurses. Eligibility requirements include being a U.S. citizen or national, currently enrolled or accepted to a nursing program, having no federal liens or service commitments and not being behind on federal debt. Grant amounts vary based on tuition and other factors.

The Department of Health and Human Services also administers the Advanced Education Nursing Grant Program, which offers grants to schools with advanced nursing programs, including master’s and doctoral degrees. The goal is to improve nursing education and the practice of nursing. Applicants must be accredited schools, health centers or nonprofits, and most of the grant money must go toward the program itself and some related administrative costs.
