Weird Scholarships & Grants

Paying for college can be challenging and many students look to scholarship and grant programs to help make higher education more affordable. While there are many traditional avenues for pursuing scholarship and grant monies, there are also some lesser-known aid programs that have unusual eligiblity requirements.
  1. Starfleet Academy Scholarships

    • Star Trek fans may consider applying for one of the many scholarship awards offered by the Starfleet Academy, the International Star Trek Fan Association. There are ten scholarships worth $500 to choose from, with eligibility criteria varying for each award. You must be a member of Starfleet International to be considered for the awards and be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university. Students enrolled in distance learning, technical or vocational programs or community colleges are encouraged to apply.

    Tall Clubs International Scholarships

    • Tall Clubs International (TCI) provides scholarships of $1,000 to students entering their first year of an undergraduate degree who are above average height. To apply, females must be at least 5 feet 10 inches tall and males must be at least six feet two inches tall. You must also be under 21 years of age and be sponsored by TCI Member Club to be considered.

    John Edgar Thomson Foundation Grant

    • The John Edgar Thomson Foundation sponsors an education grant award for female college students who are the daughters of deceased railway workers. To qualify, you must be under age22, maintain good health habits, be an active participate in your church or religious organization and have a satisfactory academic record. Eligiblity is also determined in part by family income and the surviving parent's marital status.

    AACT John Kitt Memorial Scholarship

    • The American Association of Candy Technologists (AACT) sponsors the John Kitt Memorial Scholarship for students who have a career interest in confectionary technology. To be eligible for the $5,000 award, you must a college sophomore, junior or senior who is majoring in food science or a related field. You must also have a minimum 3.0 GPA, be enrolled at an accredited college or university and be able to demonstrate prior work or study experience related to candy-making.

    National Potato Council Graduate Scholarships

    • The National Potato Council offers a $5,000 scholarship award to an outstanding graduate student who is pursuing a degree in agribusiness with a concentration in potato-related studies. Scholarships are granted based on academic merit, leadership skills and relevant coursework, including agronomy, food sciences, horticulture and plant pathology.
