Exercise Science Scholarships & Grants

Students earning degrees in exercise science can use their education for careers in coaching, fitness training, physical therapy and various roles in clinical settings. Non-profit organizations for fitness professionals and sports advocacy as well as universities offer exercise science scholarships and grants for undergraduate and graduate students in this field. The scholarships and grants may cover tuition expenses, exam preparation and travel expenses to industry conferences.
  1. The American Council on Exercise Scholarships

    • Exercise science students who are preparing for careers as certified health and fitness instructors can apply for scholarships to cover their exam preparation. The American Council on Exercise, a non-profit fitness training and education organization, offers three $1,000 scholarships for the complete ACE examination preparation materials and test fee. The award is offered only to students at Duke University, Penn State University and Manhattan College. Application requirements include a 3.0 grade point average, a community service quota of two hours per month and eligibility to take the ACE certification exam.

    Michael L. Pollock Memorial Fund

    • The American College of Sports Medicine Foundation manages the Michael L. Pollock Student Scholarship. The award of $200 is for exercise science graduate students who present research projects at the organization's annual meeting. The best two research projects are selected by a panel of ACSM fellows and former officials. Projects must focus on clinical exercise physiology or a health and fitness topic.

    Steven M. Horvath Travel Award

    • The American College of Sports Medicine Foundation's Steven M. Horvath Travel Award is for minority graduate exercise science students who need financial assistance for travel expenses to the organization's annual meeting. Two students are selected to receive $500 travel stipends. The students must present a research project at the meeting, be in good academic standing and have a faculty sponsor.

    Dorothy Harris Endowed Scholarship

    • The Women's Sports Foundation, founded by tennis legend Billie Jean King, administers the Dorothy Harris Endowed Scholarship for female graduate students studying in sports-related fields. Students must have a B average, submit two recommendations, answer essay questions and provide income information. The $1,500 award is granted during the fall semester.

    Appalachian State University

    • The Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science at Appalachian State University offers five scholarships for undergraduates. The $500 awards are granted each semester, and students may reapply each year. Rising juniors or seniors are eligible for the scholarships and must meet GPA requirements for each individual scholarship.
