The Society of Professional Journalists sponsors an essay-writing contest for students in grades 9 through 12. The society awards scholarships of $300 to $1,000 to the students who write the best 300- to 500-word essays on the importance of a free media.

Quill and Scroll, an international honor society for students involved with high-school newspapers and year books, offers the Edward J. Nell Scholarship to prospective college students. To be eligible, recipients must first win one of two Quill and Scroll contests, the Yearbook Excellence Contest or the International Writing/Photography Contest. The program awards $1,500 to two recipients and $500 to six to eight recipients. Applicants must be high school seniors planning to major in journalism.

The Journalism Education Association awards a $5,000 scholarship to the winner of the association's National High School Journalist of the Year contest. Recipients must have a 3.0 to 4.0 GPA and intend to be a professional journalist. Four runners-up receive $2,000 scholarships.

The National Press Club, an organization of professional journalists, offers a scholarship to encourage diversity in the field. Recipients receive $2,000 their first year, and they can renew the scholarship for $2,500 each year for the next three years. The scholarship includes an additional $500 for books the first year. The Freedom Forum offers high school seniors a chance to participate in the Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship and Journalism Conference Program. The organization selected more than 100 students in 2009 for the scholarship. Recipients must demonstrate a "free spirit."

The Inter American Press Association offers a stipend of up to $20,000 for college seniors and graduate students age 21 to 35 who have at least three years' professional journalism experience. Recipients spend an academic year studying and reporting in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Journalism students wanting to break into radio broadcast news can seek a scholarship from the John Bayliss Broadcast Foundation. The organization gives out $5,000 to college juniors and seniors majoring in broadcast communications who have at least a 3.0 GPA and want to work in radio broadcasting.
