CNA Programs in Philadelphia

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) are medical and health care professionals who work directly under the supervision of a doctor or nurse. Some standard tasks may include taking temperatures, assisting patients with eating, bathing and dressing, and transporting patients from one hospital department to another. They may also perform administrative and clerical tasks. According to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), CNAs must complete a certain number of training hours and pass a certification or licensing exam. The BLS also reports that demand for CNAs will increase by 18 percent by 2018, and that CNAs can expect to earn a median hourly wage of $11.46.

    • Delaware County Community College (DCCC) offers a course entitled "Nursing Assistant Theory and Practice I" which prepares prospective CNAs to work and attain licensing in Pennsylvania. During this course, students will learn emergency procedures, safety and care for bedridden patients, how to control infections and how to care for terminally ill patients, among other skills. The class consists of 90 total hours, divided between lectures, laboratory work and clinical training; students taking this course as part of a degree program will earn four credit hours. Students can complete this course in one of two locations, DCCC satellite campus Southeast Center in Sharon Hill, PA, or at the Chester County Hospital in West Chester, PA. Enrollment requires a high school diploma, GED, criminal background test and valid medical insurance.

    Northampton Community College

    • The "Nurse Aide Training Course" at Northampton Community College provides training for prospective CNAs. This 128-hour program splits instruction between classroom lectures, clinical work in local nursing facilities and laboratory skills. The instruction also includes preparation for the state licensing examination. Entrance requirements include a high school diploma or GED, medical exams and a tuberculosis test, valid health insurance and a criminal background check. Prospective students who have not resided in Pennsylvania for two years must also complete a background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Students can register at Northampton's main campus or online; all classes meet at the Fowler Family Southside Center in downtown Bethlehem, PA, about a 90 minute drive from Philadelphia.

    Community College of Allegheny County

    • The Center for Professional Development at the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) provides training for prospective CNAs via two courses. The first course, "Nursing Assistant Theory" includes 80 hours of instruction in the care of elderly patients, control of infections, the biological and physical effects of aging and how to promote independence of patients during rehabilitation, among other skills. A second course "Nursing Assistant (Clinical)" requires students to complete 80 hours of clinical training under the direction of a registered nurse at a local care facility. Clinical training will instruct students in the practical aspects of patient hygiene and safety, emergency procedures, nutrition and basic care. To register, students must have a high school diploma or GED, and must complete a PA background check, undergo medical and tuberculosis testing and provide proof of state residency. Students can register at CCAC's main campus in downtown Pittsburgh.
