Radiology technicians, also known as radiographers, provide support for doctors in the area of X-rays, mammograms, tomographs and medical imaging machines. Growth in the field is projected at 17 percent between the years 2008 and 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which estimates average annual wages at $52,210 as of May 2008.     • Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Mass., offers a program in radiologic technology. The program takes 21 months to complete. Students who graduate from MCC will receive an associate of science degree. To enter the program a student must have a high school diploma or equivalency, interview with the department staff, complete a pre-requisite test for anatomy and physiology, and sit for an information session on the major.

    Middlesex Community College

    • Middlesex Community College in Lowell offers an associate degree program in radiologic technology. The college seeks to train entry-level radiologists who have a life-long interest in expanding knowledge in their trade. The program trains students not only in radiologic procedures but also critical-thinking and problem-solving as well as oral and written communication. Graduates from the program are eligible to sit for the national certification exam given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists as well as licensure from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

    Springfield Technical Community College

    • Springfield Technical Community College hosts a program in radiography technology. Graduates from the program receive associate in science degrees. All practical and theoretical classes take place at the college, which has an X-ray machine and other equipment as well as replicas of human body parts for students to practice their trade on. The program takes two years to complete. Applicants must undergo a criminal background check before being accepted into the program.

    • Bunker Hill Community College offers two programs in medical radiography. Both programs result in an associate of science degree. The programs at Bunker Hill Community College include both a full-time daytime course and an evening part-time course. Related programs in general and cardiac sonography are also offered at Bunker Hill. Graduates from the program will be ready to sit for national professional certification and state licensure.

      Application to the program is a competitive process. Candidates are ranked based on grades in prerequisite courses, college placement testing, general education grades and any relevant work experience. The 70 highest placing applicants will receive positions in the program.
