Bronx Community College's Department of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences offers a licensed practical nursing program for students hoping to become an LPN. This 55-credit program consists of evening, weekend and online courses. The program is linked to the department's registered nurse (RN) program, with 22 of the 55 credits being transferable should the student decide to go back to school in the future to become an RN. Eligible students are high school graduates who have completed the prerequisite classes, including psychology, anatomy and English composition, with at least a "C" average. Located in Brooklyn, Medgar Evers College's nursing department offers a certificate in practical nursing. All applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, pass the CUNY Skills Assessment Exams in reading, writing and math and pass the NLN Pre-entrance Exam. After completing prerequisite courses, students can begin working on the 39 credits required to complete the certificate program. Each nursing course must be passed with at least a "B-" grade. This full-time program is 18 months in length and consists of daytime classes. Medgar Evers College is 10 miles outside Staten Island.

LaGuardia Community College, located in Long Island City, offers a certificate in practical nursing through their Health Science Department. The first portion of the 48-credit program is called the preclinical phase, during which students should maintain a high GPA in prerequisite classes like human biology and developmental psychology before they are considered for admittance to the clinical phase. During the clinical stage, students must pass a criminal history check in order to work in health care settings as part of their training. The clinical phase takes 1 year to complete and includes classes in pharmacology, nursing concepts and nutrition. LaGuardia Community College is located 16 miles northeast of Staten Island.
