LPN Programs in South Jersey

Licensed-practical-nurse job opportunities are projected to increase 21 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Licensed practical nurses, or LPNs, are health care professionals trained to provide basic bedside care. To become an LPN, you must first complete an accredited program and pass a national exam.     • Camden County College is in Blackwood. Its practical nursing program provides students with the training they need to work as practical nurses in a variety of medical settings, from hospitals to nursing homes. While students take courses in nursing and sciences, they develop thinking skills, communication skills and professional ethics. To gain admission to the program, students must be 18 years or older, take a college placement test, provide a high school or GED transcript, have a high school or college GPA of 2.0 or higher and complete a nursing entrance exam. Students must also complete a background check, have proof of health insurance, receive the required immunizations and be certified in basic life support. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

    Atlantic Institute of Technology

    • Atlantic Institute of Technology is in Mays Landing. It offers a full-time, yearlong practical nursing program. Students spend three semesters taking classes in the form of lectures, laboratories and clinicals. Lectures are from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, while clinicals start at 6:45 a.m. and usually last six hours. A two-year, part-time program is beginning in September 2010. Specialties covered include maternal nursing, psychiatric nursing, medical-surgical nursing and pediatric nursing. Students interested in the program must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and pass an entrance exam. Financial aid is available. New classes begin each August.

    Salem Community College

    • Salem Community College is in Penns Grove, New Jersey. The school's full-time, 60-credit practical nursing program introduces students to the basics of nursing, pharmacology, specialty nursing, self-care and disease processes. Students also learn the ethical and legal aspects of nursing. Students train in a simulated lab before gaining real-life experience in hospitals and nursing homes. A high school diploma or GED is required. Students can apply for financial assistance.
