Dakota Wesleyan University offers an associate's degree in nursing for the LPN-to-RN transition. The program is a one-year program, which runs from August to May. Core nursing courses include nurse management, and learning how to deal with a variety of clients in the fields of obstetrics, surgery and mental health. The program also satisfies the requirements to sit for the NCLEX exam.

Lake Area Technical Institute (LATI) and the University of South Dakota (USD) have a collaborative 1+1 Program, designed to allow LPNs who graduate from LATI to enter the USD associate-degree nursing program with advanced standing and complete it, which requires an additional 11 months for coursework. A graduate of the LPN program will be granted 12 credits toward the RN program. As an added bonus, the 1+1 Program will not only prepare a student to sit for the NCLEX RN exam but will also include the NCLEX PN exam.

The LPN-to-BSN program at Presentation College puts a student on the path to attaining a bachelor of science in nursing. The program includes classroom courses that are delivered online and clinicals that are available at three virtual sites. The LPN-to-BSN program lasts for about four years, which includes attending classes for two semesters, fall and spring. The nursing program curriculum includes subjects in anatomy and physiology, organic and biochemistry, and abnormal psychology. Graduates of the program will become eligible to sit for the NCLEX exam.

The University of South Dakota offers LPN-to-RN programs at all campuses, which are Vermillion, Pierre and Rapid City/Sioux Falls. The program is labeled as "LPN to RN Upward Mobility" and offers an associate-of-science degree in nursing. In total, the degree program consists of 65 credits including theory, laboratory and clinical learning. Upon completion of the program, a student will be able to sit for the NCLEX.
