LPN Programs in Western Massachusetts

A licensed practical nurse, also known as an LPN, is a licensed medical professional authorized to perform multiple nursing-related tasks under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing manages LPN licensure and approves all Massachusetts LPN programs.
  1. Berkshire Community College

    • The practical nurse program at Berkshire Community College is 48 credit hours and covers: adult and aging health and alterations, gerontology and family health care. The nursing portion of the program takes one year, including a summer session. Prerequisites include a high school diploma or GED and the completion of courses in human body biology, psychology and English composition. The clinical training can be done during the day, at night or on weekends.

    McCann Technical School

    • The McCann Technical School offers a 40-week full-time program for practical nursing. The course is 1,080 total hours of instruction including 540 hours of clinical nursing. Topics covered include: human biology, growth and development, foundations, trends, concepts and advanced concepts of practical nursing, nursing fundamentals, family-centered nursing and pharmacology. The majority of the program is scheduled for weekday evenings from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., with some daytime and weekend hours required. Upon completion of the program, students must take the National Counsel Licensing Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) to be licensed to work as LPNs in the state.

    Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School

    • Students at the Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School have their choice of two programs in practical nursing: a one-year daytime program that runs Mondays through Fridays, or a two-year evening program that meets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Program applicants must demonstrate physical and mental health; be 17.5 years of age with a GED or high school diploma with a minimum of a C or better grade in English, math and science; and minimum score on the school-administered Test of Academic Skills (TEAS) of 70 percent in English, 45 percent in math and 40 percent in science. A criminal background check also is required for admission to the program. The board-approved curriculum gives students broad training to work in an entry-level capacity with a variety of patients and in diverse medical settings. A discounted tuition rate is available for residents in the school's tri-county district.
