Scholarships for High School Education

Sometimes parents choose not to send their children to public school. They may prefer that their children attend a parochial or private school. Other parents may feel that their child needs specialized education at an independent school. These schools can be costly, especially if they include room and board, textbooks, uniforms and food. Fortunately, some schools and programs will provide scholarships for high school education to families who can't afford the tuition costs.
  1. Mercy Vocational High School Academic Scholarship

    • This high school offers scholarships to help with tuition assistance. Students may receive a 4-year full scholarship and a 2-year scholarship. Members of the 9th grade class will receive these scholarships. Those who want to apply for a scholarship can contact the admission office. There are eligibility requirements for the scholarship, including attending a parish elementary school in 7th and 8th grade, achieving a GPA of 90 or above in 7th grade, achieving a National Percentile (NP) score of 85 or above, submitting letters of recommendation, maintaining a conduct average of 85 or above and having few absences and lateness. There are also grants and scholarships for juniors and seniors that are attending the school.

    The Independent Scholarship Fund

    • This scholarship is for students who are interested in attending a private school or independent high school in the San Francisco East Bay. This privately funded scholarship provides funding to low-income and moderate-income families. The students should reside in either the Contra Costa or Alameda counties and be in grades 9 through 12. The Independent Scholarship fund will give families $1,500 or three-fourths of their teen's tuition--whichever amount is less.

The Glenwood School for Boys and Girls

    • This school's mission is to provide assistance to low-income families who cannot pay the costs of parochial or private high school. More than 60% of their recipients come from families that are living below the poverty level, according to the Glenwood School website. Glenwood is able to provide tuition scholarships to children from low-income families, in part because of donations from the community. These scholarships provide room, board, education and food to the students that are attending their high school program.
