The NCAA offers several scholarship opportunities for various sports. They award $1 billion dollars in athletic scholarships each year. In 2008, they have also established the Jim McKay scholarship in honor of his work in sports journalism. One male and one female are awarded each year with a $10,000 scholarship. The award is given to those with strong academic achievement and also who show strong skill in sports communication. They also offer scholarships for ethnic minority's and women that show string potential in sports. Many of their scholarships are offered to students who have no intentions of pursing a career in sports, but who show strong academic skills as well as talent in whatever area of sport they are in.

The Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Scholarships (SAMMY) are awarded to students that show excellence on the field and in their grades as well. They award 25 students with a $7500 scholarship each year. All winners will appear in a milk mustache ad and also win a trip to Disney World. Winners are selected by "Milk Mustache" celebrities such as Michelle Kwan and Steve Nash.

Every year the Rudy Awards a scholarship of $10,000 to a high school football player advancing into college and offers two $5000 scholarships to the runner-ups; they also offer other scholarships awards. The Rudy Awards were created as a response to Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger who never gave up on his dream of one day playing for Notre Dame. His story has inspired countless people and was turned into a film titled Rudy.

The Women's Western Golf Foundation has awarded more than $3 million dollars to women showing talent in the area of golf. Excellence in golfing is not part of the criteria to be accepted for these scholarships. Instead, the focus is on academic achievement of a 3.0 GPA or higher and financial need. The award amount is $2,000 for each recipient.
