Large colleges and universities, such as the University California Los Angeles, have scholarships available for athletes considered "gifted". UCLA's standards are generally higher than other institutions. Athletes that are offered a scholarship program through UCLA usually have other educational universities or colleges that have offered them enrollment. Although admission in to the UCLA volleyball program can be difficult keeping a high grade point average, and scoring high on the SAT exam will boost your opportunity to receive a scholarship.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA, offers programs for male and female players. It is very difficult to receive a scholarship through the NCAA because of the large amount of applicants. The NCAA considers the individual's academics and athletes sport history when granting scholarships. The NCAA divides the scholarships among the eight different Divisions. Four and a half scholarships are awarded to men per Division and 12 scholarships to women per division. Students who are applying for the scholarship must take 14 core classes in college and maintain a 2.5 GPA, grade point average, or higher, and have a score of 820 on their SAT.

The ideal time to apply for a scholarship is immediately after high school graduation or within two years of graduating. Usually, colleges recruit players that are 18 to 24 years old. Colleges are looking for younger players so they can teach and train them according to the colleges' standard of performance. When submitting an application for a scholarship it is advised to send a short video, usually five to 10 minutes, of you in playing to the peak of your ability. Applying early for the scholarship is advised because this allows the institution to view your application, watch you play, and possibly work out a contract before the last year of high school is completed.
Volleyball players that have competed in the First Division have a higher chance of receiving a scholarship than others. Also, participating in ranking tournaments improve your profile and overall skill. Applicants must meet the minimum GPA required by the schools admission board, usually a 2.0 or higher. Once accepted for a scholarship the athlete must be able to attend five practices a week normally running two to three hours each session.
