Scholarships for Non High School Students

While many students about to graduate high school have a number of scholarship options, a large number of students currently in college require continuing assistance, especially due to consistent tuition hikes each year. A number of scholarship funds are available to students already out of high school and immersed in the next stage of their education.
  1. Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

    • The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship provides academic scholarships to collegiate juniors and seniors studying engineering, mathematics or science. Students receive $7,500 for one or two years depending on their estimated graduation date. All students must either be U.S. citizens or nationals who are citizens of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Northern Marina Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands or Guam. To be eligible students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average or a "B" average in a weighted grading system and be nominated by a faculty representative. Students must complete an application that includes an essay as well as college and high school transcripts.

    Harry S. Truman Scholarship

    • Students pursuing a career in public service have the opportunity to win the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, which provides up to $30,000. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation awards up to 65 scholarships per year to students who are United States citizens or nationals from the Northern Mariana Islands or American Samoa. Students must apply during their junior year and include in the application a public policy proposal. The foundation only accepts students nominated by a foundation representative on the school's faculty, and students must be in the top 25 percent academically in their class. Awarded students get invited to a number of career-enhancement programs such as Truman Scholar Leadership Week and The Truman-Albright Fellows Program.

    DHS Scholarship Program

    • Processed through the Oak Ridge Institute, the Department of Homeland Security Undergraduate Scholarship offers financial awards to students majoring in science, mathematics, technology and engineering as it relates to homeland security. Students must be entering at least their second year of studies at a four- or five-year college degree program to be eligible. The scholarship provides $1,000 for each month of studies as well as a $5,000 stipend during a mandatory 10-month research internship. Students who accept the scholarship are unable to receive any other federal scholarship, grant or fellowship aid. An awards committee reviews the applications, which includes three essays, letters of recommendation and academic transcripts.
