Scholarships for Average High School Seniors

High school students with average grades can qualify for scholarships. Due to the generosity of government entities, foundations and organizations nationwide, finding available money to pay for education is becoming more accessible. Scholarships not based on grade point average are out there. In most cases, they take into consideration a student's community activities, desire to succeed and college readiness.
  1. Horatio Alger Association

    • The Horatio Alger Association makes available scholarships for high school seniors. Applicants must demonstrate financial need with gross parental income should not exceeding $50,000 a year. Scholarship awards vary from $10,000 to $1,000, and students can renew their awards each year. Some application requirements include a minimum GPA of 2.0, U.S. citizenship and involvement in community projects. Applications are available each year in the fall.

    AXA Foundation

    • The Axa Foundation provides funds through its AXA Achievement Scholarship program. The foundation joined forces with Scholarship America and U.S. News & World Report to offer high school students the opportunity to receive money to pay for college. To qualify, students must show they are in the process of impacting their communities. Along with the willingness to promote change, students must demonstrate they are ready to perform academic college work. The scholarship is a one-time award of $10,000. Recipients are chosen by Scholarship America.

    Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund

    • Established to further the cause of labor relations, civil rights and peace movements, the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund provides scholarships up to $10,000. To be considered for a scholarship, applicants must submit a personal statement showing interest in social justice, letters of recommendation, transcripts and proof of financial aid. The application period begins each year in April. Students are encouraged to visit the fund's website for additional updates.
