General Scholarships for High School Seniors

Most scholarship programs are for graduating high school seniors. However, many of these awards have a number of specific requirements for applicants. While almost every scholarship does have basic requirements, general scholarships for high school seniors are accessible to more people than not. These applications may require full-time college attendance, as well as an essay or letters of recommendation.
  1. U.S. Bank Internet Scholarship

    • The U.S. Bank Internet Scholarship is available to both graduating high school seniors and current college undergraduate students. In 2010, the bank planned to award 40 $1,000 scholarships, which is 10 more offered awards than in 2009.

The application process is fairly simple, but can only be completed online. Students must plan full-time attendance at accredited colleges that issue federally-funded student loans through U.S. Bank.

    Jackie Robinson Scholarships

    • The Jackie Robinson Foundation---in honor of the first African American man to play for the once-segregated Major League Baseball---offers numerous scholarships to high school students of any minority group. Minorities usually include African American, Hispanic, Asian American, Native American or Pacific Islander.

The foundation typically offers successful applicants a renewable award of $7,500 for college study. The program also includes mentoring, networking, leadership development workshops, special trips and internship opportunities. The awards can only be used at a four-year accredited college and can be renewed for the entire four years of study as long as the recipient maintains acceptable academic progress.

    Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program

    • The Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program is open to graduating high school seniors living in any state. The program is geared toward students who have overcome significant hardships in their lives, which could include anything from parental divorce to an illness of a close family member or student. Significant financial need is also considered a hardship in this program. The foundation also offers additional programs in select states such as Arizona, California, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland and Virginia.

The national program doesn't require a specific planned college major. The scholarships enable selected students to start their college educations at a two-year school and then transfer to a four-year university. The scholarship judges look for students who are service-oriented, according to the program's website.

The Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program usually awards 104 $20,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Current college students living in select states may also be eligible for smaller educational awards. A minimum 2.0 grade point average is required for all programs. National Scholars also receive all-expense paid trips to Washington, D.C.
