College Scholarships for Juniors in High School

Higher education is expensive. If you are college-bound, there is no better time than your junior year of high school to begin your scholarship search. Taking the time to write a few essays--or play with duct tape--can save you and your parents some grief when your tuition bill approaches its due date.
  1. Cappex "A GPA Isn't Everything" Scholarship

    • Students must sign up for a Cappex account and fill out the "Activities" portion of their profiles to be eligible. Participants will be judged on the basis of their extracurricular activities. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship, paid directly to his college or university of choice.

Duck Tape "Stuck At Prom" Contest

    • This contest requires students to enter as couples. Participants will need to create a prom ensemble made out of duct tape, then submit a photograph of themselves wearing the ensemble to enter. Ten finalists will be chosen on the basis of workmanship, creativity, use of color, accessories and the amount of duct tape used. The public will vote to select the winning entries. The first prize couple will receive a $3,000 scholarship each, with an additional $3,000 going to their high school. Second, third and runner-up prizes are also available.

    Holocaust Remembrance Project Essay Contest

    • Participants must compose a 1,200-word essay on the importance of the Holocaust remembrance and combating prejudice. Students' work will be judged on the basis of research, approach, organization and writing skills. Ten first-place winners will receive scholarships in the amount of $2,500 to $5,000 payable directly to their colleges or universities of choice, as well as a trip to Los Angeles to participate in a Holocaust Remembrance Project event. Second and third prizes are also available.

    Signet Classics Scholarship

    • Participants in the Signet Classics Scholarship program are expected to write an essay concerning that year's Signet Classics novel. Students can choose from five preselected topics. Their high school English teachers or homeschooling parents must submit for them on their behalf. Five winners will be selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship. Their high schools will receive a Signet Classics library.

    Young Naturalist Awards

    • High school juniors are expected to conduct original research on a scientific topic of their choice and synthesize their findings into a 1,000- to 3,000-word essay. Essays will be judged on the chosen topic, the procedure used to collect data, data analysis and how the student has documented her research. Two high school juniors will receive a $2,000 scholarship.
