Scholarships for High School Seniors With Asthma

High school seniors living with chronic asthma, a disease that causes daily chest tightness and difficulty breathing and often requires the use of an inhaler, have several opportunities to apply for college scholarships. These scholarships are available through organizations designed to research, educate and assist people afflicted with asthma as well as the general public. The scholarships range in amounts from $500 to $5,000, and are only given to college-bound seniors with demonstrated academic or extra-curricular achievements.
  1. Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America

    • Regional chapters of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) provide scholarships to high school seniors with asthma who have served as a role model for younger children afflicted with the disease. Nine regional chapters are active nationwide. Applicants must live in the region of the chapter to which they apply. Each applicant is required to submit a transcript and an essay explaining high school achievements, intentions while attending college, and examples of mentoring activities to youth with asthma. The scholarships are each worth $500. For more information, contact your local AAFA chapter.

    Merck Respiratory

    • The Merck Respiratory Corporation offers "Will to Win" Asthma Scholarships, targeted toward high school seniors who have sustained an active, healthy lifestyle despite their asthma. Ten $5,000 scholarships are available to seniors excelling in five different types of activities, including athletics, student government, visual arts, performing arts and community service. Applicants must have at least a 3.5 grade point average, as well as demonstrated proof of achievement in one of the five disciplines. Letters of recommendation, a transcript, and an essay are also required to apply. For more information and to fill out an application online, refer to the "Will to Win" website.

American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology

    • The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology offers scholarships through the Asthma Scholarship Program Award of Excellence. Two scholarships of $1,000 each are offered each year to high school seniors who live with documented asthma. Winners must demonstrate academic excellence, as well as involvement in extracurricular activities and volunteer organizations. Depending on the number of applicants, several $100 Merit Awards may also be awarded. The money received can go toward any expense during two- or four- year college programs. Refer to the AAAAI website for more details.
